Plastic Free July: A global movement to reduce plastic waste

Our daily lives are filled with plastics. From food and plastic packaging to our bathroom products, clothing, and children’s toys, many of these common products release toxic chemicals, creating harmful health impacts. Reducing your exposure is an essential step to protect yourself and your family. Over this month, I will be sharing tips to reduce plastic in your home/life.


Remember, you don’t have to change everything all at once. Some of the tips will work for you, others might not.

DAY ONE: I’m starting in the bathroom. The last time I did a beach clean up, I found dozens of cotton swab sticks. Did you know that most COTTON SWABS are joined by a plastic stick?


SWAP: Try to go without using a cotton swab at all or opt for those that have a paper stick - they're compostable! At the very least, if you use them, please throw them in the trash. Many people flush swabs down the toilet. Because they are thin and buoyant, they easily squeeze through the screens at wastewater treatment plants and spill directly into rivers and oceans.


DAY TWO: Researchers estimate that roughly 80 billion plastic SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER bottles enter marine environments globally every year. In the United States alone, over 552 million empty shampoo bottles are discarded into landfills annually, and single-use plastics make up about 40% of all ocean litter.


SWAPS: Use highly concentrated shampoo and conditioner bars, which eliminate plastic waste entirely. This is Debbie: I personally use Humby bars. Use refill stations: Support local zero-waste shops to continuously reuse your plastic bottles. Type your ZIP Code into this site and find a refilling station near you.
